In Montenegro, the mountains of Sinjajevina are threatened by the installation of a military camp supported by NATO.<\/span><\/span> Strong opposition to this project has won another victory in recent weeks!<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

On the occasion of the Peasant and Rural Struggle Gatherings<\/a> in Bure, from August 26 to September 3, one of the opponents will come and tell us about their struggle.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Solidarity with the fight against the installation of a military camp in Sinjajevina!<\/span><\/span> Despite the magnitude of the power they are fighting against, they have once again succeeded in defending their mountains.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The People Kept NATO Off Their Mountain Again\u00a0!<\/h1>\n

The U.S. military had threatened<\/a> to use the mountains of Sinjajevina<\/a> as a training ground between May 22nd and June 2nd, together with other troops under the banner of NATO. Instead, the troops went to other<\/a> locations in Montenegro but never to the mountains of Sinjajevina.<\/p>\n

Milan Sekulovic<\/span><\/span> of Save Sinjajevina<\/a> credited local and international pressure \u2014\u00a0 including from International Land Coalition<\/a> \u2014 for this latest success in the ongoing campaign to protect Sinjajavina<\/a> from being turned into a military training ground. It also may have helped that Montenegro has parliamentary elections on June 11th, and in \u201cdemocracies\u201d governments prefer not to do highly unpopular things, breaking past promises, immediately before elections.<\/p>\n

People had most recently turned out<\/a> to oppose military exercises in snowy February, but have been nonviolently preventing the planned destruction of their mountains for years<\/a>.<\/p>\n
