The Atlanta Police Department wants to steal and raze the Atlanta Forest, a key area to defend against climate change and storm flooding, to build a dystopian training ground called « Cop City » – the largest police city in the United States. In an attempt to further intensify social control, develop surveillance and control in general that will inevitably lead to more and more police violence, the proposed project is also a continuation of the settler-colonialist depopulation of the Muscogee Nation’s homeland, whose land was stolen by the state in the 19th century.
Since late 2021, the forest has been occupied and defended by fellow environmental justice activists, neighborhood associations, racial justice activists, and supported by acts of resistance and solidarity across the United States and around the world.
On January 18, 2023, the state’s militias launched one of several raids, this time brutally killing much-loved fellow activist Tort (Tortuguita), who has fought tirelessly for the forest and many other anti-authoritarian and social injustice causes. Seeing our fellow activists fall or be incarcerated for defending ideas of freedom and anti-authoritarianism only fuels our rage against this global system of domination.
In Bure, France, in 2016 and 2018, as in Atlanta today, many people also occupied a forest against a devastating, polluting and socially intolerable project still underway, called « Cigéo ». Intended to bury nuclear waste from French power plants at a depth of 500m, the project is still moving forward, and so is the struggle against it.
Those who defended the « Bois le Juc » forest, and those who are still fighting against this project, support the defenders of the Atlanta forest, and are compassionate with the vengeful sadness of Tort’s friends, family and comrades about his senseless and brutal murder.
Stop Cop city!
Stop CiGEO ! Out with ANDRA!
Down with all the hideous capitalist projects of militarization, devastation and brutalization of the land and its peoples!
