[Bremen/Germany] Sabotage of the nuclear industry!

On 01.03 we attacked the Kaefer Group in Bremen and sabotaged part of its infrastructure. Specifically, we destroyed the training center for industrial climbing technology and several vehicles by fire. The specific aim of the action was to sustainably harm Kaefer as a service provider to the nuclear and arms industries as well as various areas of resource exploitation. Kaefer is a cogwheel in this deadly and more destructive machine – and a damn important one at that.
The site is a detached, manageable building in an industrial area that is used as a material depot and workshop. There were no people in the building. Vulnerability of people was excluded.

Kaefer’s role in militarization and environmental destruction

The entanglements and structure of the Kaefer Group are made up of a complex international web and it would go beyond the scope of this text to go into detail on all aspects. Therefore, we will give a brief overview before we delve deeper into the nuclear sector. For a more comprehensive insight, we recommend reading this text (in german).

Kaefer works for various multinational fossil chemical and energy companies and is actively involved in conventional oil production, natural gas and LNG projects, oil sands production, offshore production, coal mining, … along the entire processing chain, from the extraction and refining of fuels and other petrochemical products to transport via pipeline, ship and terminals to combustion in power plants of all kinds. In addition, Kaefer supports the construction and maintenance of industrial facilities in wood and paper processing (including projects in the Amazon region, e.g. in the production of ethanol from soy), as well as in ore and copper mines, steel and aluminum plants and heavy industry. The group, headquartered in Bremen, is also active in cement production –one of the most environmentally harmful industries of all–. Another focus is the arms industry, especially military aerospace and military shipbuilding (submarines and warships with international customers such as Erdogan’s dictatorship or the regime in Egypt).
It does not take lengthy explanations to establish that the areas of the capitalist economy mentioned are among the dirtiest of all. There is no other way to put it, Kaefer is actively working internationally to destroy our livelihoods!

Kaefer as a cogwheel of the nuclear industry

Kaefer works for the nuclear energy and nuclear weapons industries throughout Europe, from Finland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, France and internationally from South Africa to China. Kaefer has been working for the nuclear industry as an industrial service provider since its beginnings in the 1960s. Kaefer has the specific knowledge, research facilities, specially developed products and the professionals to work in this area. A particularly important customer is the French nuclear industry:
Naval, for example, is one of Kaefer’s customers and builds warships, aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines. Kaefer also works with Orano (including on the construction of the Olkiluoto III nuclear power plant in Finland).
However, for current reasons, the focus should be on collaboration with Framatome. The French state-owned company Framatome is the nuclear division of the French state-owned energy giant EDF. For Framatome, Kaefer works on various projects, as already mentioned in Finland, at various nuclear power plants in France and also in South Africa, where Framatome operates the Koeberg nuclear power plant. We could name projects endlessly, but it should have become clear that Kaefer and Framatome have long been international partners.
Framatome has its fuel rods produced in Lingen (Lower Saxony), among other places, where Kaefer also operates a branch. A direct collaboration at the Lingen site is therefore obvious, but has not yet become public.
In Lingen, Framatome plans to produce nuclear fuel rods under a Russian license in cooperation with the Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom, which will then be used in Soviet-designed Eastern European nuclear power plants. For this purpose, Framatome (through its subsidiary Advanced Nuclear Fuels GmbH) and Rosatom (through its subsidiary TWEL) founded a joint venture in 2019. The fuels are produced using the Russian „Elektrostal process“, which (according to information from Russian activists*) results in a much higher radiation exposure. Of course, Russia does not collect any official data on this. Production in Lingen required approval from politicians in Lower Saxony and the Bundestag. Even though there is no official position from both the state and federal governments yet, various media outlets reported earlier this week that the green light for the project was given from Berlin after a „security review“!
We can all let this sink in for a moment : the Merz government is debating a German nuclear weapons program ; Macron is positioning France as a nuclear protecting power against the aggressor in the East, while at the same time nuclear deals are being concluded between French and Russian state-owned companies and with the approval of the German government. It doesn’t take much insight to realize that these governments and corporations like Kaefer are equally reducing their supposed goals of security, peace, defense, and sustainability to absurdity.

To summarize : Kaefer is a service provider to the nuclear (weapons) industry and is emerging not only as an economic profiteer, but also as a grassroots producer and research actor. This makes Kaefer part of the nuclear industry, driving its further expansion and supporting various deadly industries. Kaefer is a cog, a link in the production chains of destruction – but this small-scale way of working is a product of capitalism itself and is intended to conceal real responsibility.

Resistance to the nuclear industry

Also absurd and dangerous is the repository in Bure in the Meuse department, Grand Est region, not far from the borders with Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland. There, ANDRA, the French nuclear waste agency, wants to drive a gigantomaniac tunnel system underground. The CIGEO project –like all nuclear waste storage facilities sold to us as safe so far– will leak sooner or later and is a ticking time bomb. But the expropriations and repression that accompany the project are already harming the people of the region. The use of nuclear power exposes states and corporations for what they are : institutions of domination! Literally ready for money and power to destroy the foundations of life. But that is only one side of the story, on the other there is a wonderful continuity of resistance. That is why our action joins the call for resistance against the nuclear industry.
