Les Bestiales – Event around animal emancipation (February 17-20)

  • Date:
  • Venue: La gare

Edit: shuttle number: 0744211630 if you need to be driven from  Joinville or Ligny

edit 2: There is a prefectural arrếté that prohibits the transport of flammable materials, construction materials and paint cans. it doesn’t change much except that they may have requisitions to search vehicles and check identities (as long as they don’t show you a requisition, only the driver has to give his identity and they can’t search the vehicle whatever they say).

Edit 3: There are quite a few identity checks by the cops. On Friday around 2pm, they were checking cars at the exit of Joinville towards Bure. They also control people on foot between Mandres en Barrois (village of l’Affranchie) and La Gare. We don’t know yet if they have requisitions.

These meetings will take place from February 17 to 20, 2023 around Bure.

The information here will be completed as we go along on bureburebure.info.

Pre-registration (not mandatory)

To help us anticipate the logistics, it’s cool if you pre-register. It’s anonymous, not mandatory and not binding, but it gives us some guidelines.

Program and what we would like to add in

The big projects of concretization, the nuclear power in general and the nuclear waste project of Bure in particular, are to the detriment of the species that already live in these environments and contribute to the destruction of living spaces, travel, feeding animals. Struggles tend to be seen from a purely utilitarian point of view with regard to human beings.

We wanted to invite a few people to meet and exchange on antispeciesist visions. Antispeciesism is often crystallized around veganism, and we don’t always take the time to exchange on the imprint of capitalism on other human species, to exchange on the struggles that can take place against animal exploitation and against the meat industry, against the urbanization that wants to control all spaces and leave no more space. That is why we wanted to take a time for this topic.

Workshops

We will try to concoct great workshops but we also want to co-design these meetings and their content with you. We hope you will come with your ideas for discussions/workshops/etc. to share together what our antispeciesism is and how we can put it into action. Don’t hesitate to let us know in the form or by email if you want to animate stuff or co-construct a workshop with us, on subjects that speak to you and seem important. There will also be spaces during the meetings for unscheduled workshops if you want to think about something and see how you feel about it at the time.

Some ideas that we have had with several people about what we would like to exchange. For these themes we don’t always have people to lead a workshop

We would like to have different formats than conferences (role-play, survey, film, podcast, discussion, …)

* Consequences of nuclear power on animals and their environment

* making stickers, posters, embroidery, etc.

* exchange about hunting

* agriculture without animal inputs

* sharing experiences of struggles

* reflection on a world without animal exploitation

* animal experimentation

* Speciesism and systemic oppressions

* Destruction of space by urbanization and capitalist activities

* non-western antispeciesism

* Animal exploitation / human exploitation

* Communicating with our non-human friends, empowering ourselves to care for them

* Singing / film / brazier evening

* whatever you want to speak about 🙂

Temporary programming of bestials

poster 1, poster 2, poster 3.

– We are looking for people to carry a canteen on some meals.

– Come a few days before to help (we begin the 14th and end the 22nd of february) / stay a few days after to help prepare / put away.

– Offer workshops / bring resources

– Any practical help during the event (shuttle, care, etc)

Practical organization

Location and transportation

A priori the event will take place between 2 places: L’Affranchie and La Gare which are separated by 4 km. If you can come with a bike, or if you come with a car and you can contribute to the shuttles during the meetings, it will be welcome. (It will also be possible to borrow bikes / walk / shuttles will be organized on site).

How to get there? – Sleep – food – electricity

All the info can be found on this page: https://bureburebure.info/venir/

Check out the description of the place on the page if you have never been there before.

For the practical aspects, if you come by car, don’t hesitate to put an ad on mobicoop to carpool (Bure is in the destinations), check also if people have not published ads there. If you want to arrive by train, you can aim for Joinville or Bar-le-Duc. From Bar-le-Duc, a bus will take you to Ligny-en-Barrois (bus timetable), beware, very few buses on Sundays! A phone number will soon be available on the event page to pick you up in Joinville or Ligny. Don’t hesitate to hitchhike otherwise 🙂

There will be vegan canteens on site and we will have everything you need for mornings and meals. However do not hesitate to bring what would please you to eat / share. The whole event will be free of charge: financial contribution according to your possibilities and desires.

For the nights there will be several dormitories, some in mixed gender, some mixed. Some will be in less heated spaces than others. Don’t hesitate to send us an email if you have specific needs, for example if you can’t sleep in a dormitory. If you come in a truck, it will be possible to sleep at the place La Gare.

Cold

The train station has had several insulation works, it will be less cold than in previous years. The event will be on 2 places and some arrangements will be made to have more warm spaces. Don’t hesitate to bring your comforter and warm clothes.

Electricity

Our electrical installations will not allow us to plug in a thousand things. If you can plan to not need your phone or your computer it’s better! Priority will be given to the people who run the workshops.

Food

If you can find food in the bins on the way, that would be welcome 🙂 However, we will only cook vegan stuff. Also the shops are far away, if there is food that make you feel better, don’t hesitate to buy it before.

Non-human animals

We realize that the space is not ideal for the reception of non-humans who might want to accompany you, we will surely be numerous and rather tight inside to protect ourselves from the cold and the bad weather.

If you live with non-human friends who are rather stressed or uncomfortable to be in the middle of other dogs or humans without much space it can be complicated to live, if you have other places where they can spend the weekend it can be easier for them and for us.

If they come anyway we will do our best to include them, offering spaces in the progra to be able to do walks with them and all that ( /!\ the event will take place during the hunting season, to be taken into account for the walks…) but the days locked up with humans talking are not the most fun for them.

It’s up to you to see how it can be managed and if you can find more satisfactory solutions for them to spend the weekend elsewhere or if you prefer to help them to be as well as possible in the conditions on the spot.

Police surveillance

The struggles in Bure as well as the anti-speciesist struggles are subject to police surveillance. There is a police presence on the territory of the Meuse but at the moment the controls are not frequent. However, we invite you to consult the legal briefing here. It is also possible that there are requisitions to the telephone operators or the IMSI Catcher of the police to know the telephones that have been landed on the territory.

Translation

Even if we would like to be able to build an international event, we thought we had not enough energy to organize  a lot of translation. Translation will be mainly thought for english speakers :/

Contact

It is possible to write to rencontres-animales@immerda.ch for more information or to propose workshops.
