Bure Stop !
Solidarity with the « french Gorleben »
In front of the mine, built in the past to allow the creation of a “final nuclear waste storage site at Gorleben”, Wendland opponents today expressed their solidarity with those who oppose the proposed “Cigéo” storage site in France.

“You can destroy La Gare, but not the force that brought it to life!” – By slightly adapting the old slogan of the evacuation of the village of Hüttendorf in 1004, we are sending it as a greeting and promise from Wendland to Lorraine. Because Gorleben is everywhere – for example also in Bure. » This painting action follows a judgment rendered by an administrative court. Last Monday, he gave the green light for the evacuation of La Gare by the police force.
As part of the preparatory work for the Cigéo nuclear waste disposal site project, a railway line dedicated to Castor containers must be built and connected to the public rail network of SNCF. If the Cigéo project comes into being, these tracks will welcome 100 Castor transports each year, that is two per week. For this project, a railway line disused for decades is put back into service. As part of the “rehabilitation” of the line, land and buildings were expropriated. The old station of Luméville-en-Ornois is one of them.
In the early 2000s, La Gare – the station building and the surrounding 8 hectares of land, located at the heart of the planned route (!) – was bought back, revived and transformed into a center of resistance. Even after the judicial expropriation, the place retained its importance for local and national antinuclear commitment : the former residential property became a squat. And this one must now be evacuated. The court wants to remove this major obstacle to permanent storage projects.

Context
In the small town of Bure, in Lorraine, ANDRA, the French agency responsible for nuclear waste management, has been operating an underground laboratory for 15 years. This facility aims to pave the way for the construction of a final storage site in this region, intended to accommodate both hot and highly radioactive fuel elements from French nuclear power plants, as well as low- and intermediate-level waste. A request to this effect has been made ; although the supervisory authority found serious shortcomings in the application file, there are signs that authorisation to start construction could be granted by the end of this year.
