Warmer than nuclear – for a black spring in 2026 !

Call for a militant offensive against CIGEO, the nuclear, and its shitty world !

Published on lille.indymedia (in french)

While the antinuclear movement in France and around the world seems to have long passed its apogee, the nuclear issue is now once again becoming a crucial topical issue. With the current military conflicts between various atomic powers almost ready to press the button reorganizing the global balance of power; the development of the national “civilian” nuclear program (revival of nuclear power), or with the gradual implementation of a totally irresponsible concept of radioactive waste management, the future darkens further. We do not want to repeat here all the arguments that oppose the use of this technology of domination over populations and total destruction from a military point of view. These have already been sufficiently exposed and documented in the past. This text focuses rather on the current state of the anti-nuclear resistance movement in France, as well as on the feasible action options that result from it, and this from an anarchist point of view.

2025 was an eventful and busy year for anti-nuclear control in Bure and beyond. On one side, massive expropriations by ANDRA grabbing agricultural land as well as the old train station of Luméville (one of the places of resistance and organization against Cigéo), and the advance of preliminary work inside and outside the laboratory, of the other, the implementation of the occupation of La Gare, the camp of « Infinite September » and the demonstration determined the same month. Elsewhere too, in La Hague, visible protests against the extension of the spent fuel cooling plant which bore the slogan: Neither at La Hague nor at Bure nor elsewhere do we want to be radioactive waste sites ! Erupted. Even if resistance against the French civil and military nuclear program remains relatively weak in view of the magnitude of the problem for current and future generations, we note a certain positive dynamic within the antinuclear movement as a whole. And this is absolutely necessary, because in the future, the movement, and with it, all of humanity will face considerable challenges.

Currently, La Gare is still occupied, but we don’t know how long it will last. The occupiers are still calling to join and support them, notably through solidarity actions (link in french), and have also launched an appeal in case of an attempted eviction (link). We support these calls and indeed believe that it is wise to prepare an action plan in advance in case of an attack on La Gare. If the occupation continues successfully – what we of course wish the occupiers, however, focusing on the only local situation can become problematic and limited. Particularly given the progress of work on CIGEO, we would find it harmful to adopt a wait-and-see attitude rather than going on the offensive. But we also do not want to discuss these approaches against each other in order to determine which is the “best”, the legal offensive has repeatedly proven its effectiveness in its own strategy. We believe that resistance practices must complement and reinforce each other, and it is in this state of mind that our current proposal should be understood.

The concrete proposal : whatever the evolution of the situation at La Gare, we call to take advantage of the spring months to carry out a massive wave of actions against ongoing projects, funders and accomplices of the nuclear industry in a targeted manner, decentralized, subversive and autonomous. We also want to invite the groups active in the radical ecological struggle to highlight more aspects related to nuclear policy in their speeches and thus to anchor themselves in a combative and supportive perspective with the resistance to Bure and the anti-nuclear movement in general. We further call to explicitly situate these actions and demands in the context of this call : “for a black spring in 2026” in order to create a collective dynamic on an informal and autonomous basis, to advance a common posture, and thus mutually strengthen.

It is obvious that a campaign specifically targeting a company participating in the construction of CIGEO alongside ANDRA could generate greater public visibility and cause more economic damage or pressure on it. We have nevertheless decided to call for a “black spring” against the entire nuclear complex. On the one hand, we want to make possible the participation of autonomous structures far from Bure, on the other hand, we want to counter a trend that we consider rather reductive : Limit the critique of nuclear power to its local issues or to the management of waste it produces.

Indeed, we are convinced that the antinuclear movement will only have victory if it succeeds, to a greater extent than today, to highlight the close links between nuclear policies and the urgent issues of our time and to draw consequences in terms of convergence. This applies not only to social issues on a global scale, those of climate change, that of mineral resources exacerbating new colonialist ambitions, but also military issues leading to current devastating conflicts and to be feared in the years to come. Because military use, the unbridled thirst for energy and resources in the development of AI, big data & co, as well as the myth of a supposedly clean transition of this sector are the main drivers of the current development of the global nuclear program.

With this call, we are therefore deliberately referring to the very successful campaign “Welcome Spring – crame a Tesla” (link in french) which, in the first half of the year 2025, not only mobilized against electric mobility and the outrageous data collection by companies, but also emphasized the links between technological oligarchy and nascent fascism.

With this call “for a black spring in 2026,” we invite you to bury permanently not the radioactive waste, but the CIGEO project in the basements of the Meuse and at the same time, to try to further curb the workings of the techno-industrial of the atom and its operators. However, we think that it is high time to be honest, which also means, in case of doubt, to admit one’s own weakness. Direct action and sabotage can be a way to overcome this weakness and move forward together. This is however only valid if we understand the militant option for what it is : a strategic tool and not a profession of faith of a radical political identity. For this, the viability of such action strategies in practice must be validated. Let’s go together in search of it – we look forward to your contributions !
